JAPANESE GARDEN BUILDING: An updated reconstruction of a building at the Japanese garden at Cowden Castle near Dollar. This azumaya (a building to rest in and view the garden from) is constructed in a Japanese style, but with a mixture of traditional Japanese and European joinery. The design decisions were informed by historical precedent (photographs), traditional Japanese practice, materials durability issues and present-day design requirements. We built the entire thing (bar the foundation pads) and raised it by hand.
The overall design was by Justin Rose and architect Matthew Pease, with additional input from Professor Masao Fukuhara the garden designer for the Cowden project.
The timber was from Scottish Wood (oak), and Gilmour & Aitken (Madeira Greenheart for the posts).
